We often hear that we should opt for food that reduces acidity or has an alkalinising effect. Or that various maladies are being caused by an acidic environment in our body. But what does it all mean?

What is Acidity?

This refers to how acidic or alkaline the liquid in your body is. Acidity and alkalinity are measured by pH. Water is considered to be neutral and has a pH of 7.0. Every cell in the body has some liquid in it and the pH of that liquid determines whether your bodily fluids, cells and organs are acidic, alkaline or neutral. Being pH neutral is best.

The best pH levels for:

  • Saliva: 6.5 to 7.5
  • Blood: 7.3
  • Urine: 6.5 to 7.0 (6.0 to 6.5 first thing in the morning)
  • Colon: 4.5 to 5.0

Usually, the body will neutralise acids that accumulate in the body by using a buffer system, where the acidic liquid is coupled with an alkaline system. So, for example, if the blood plasma is becoming too acidic, the kidneys excrete hydrogen ions and produce bicarbonate to bring the blood plasma’s pH down to neutral.

Symptoms of High Acid Levels in the Body

When the acids are too high for the buffer system of the body to handle, the body starts to borrow alkaline minerals from your bones and organs in an attempt to neutralise the acids and dissolve acidic compounds. This compromises the health and strength of your bones and vital organs in the process, which means that just about every part of your body is negatively affected by too much acid in your body. It has an especially bad effect on the digestive, immune, metabolic, intestinal, respiratory and circulatory systems.

An acidic system can cause:

  • Inefficient digestion
  • Bad breath
  • Fatigue and breathlessness
  • Osteoporosis
  • Muscle pain
  • Joint pain
  • Bladder and kidney infections
  • Migraines
  • Cramps
  • Weight gain
  • Nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea
  • Cavities in your teeth
  • Sweating too much
  • Dark, smelly urine
  • Skin issues like eczema, acne or psoriasis
  • Fungal infections

A build-up of acid in the body is usually caused by stress and dietary imbalances.

Foods That Reduce Acidity in the Body

Incorporating certain foods in your diet and eliminating others can affect your acidity dramatically. Cut out all processed foods, sugar and alcohol. Reduce the amount of meat and dairy that you consume, and steer clear of carbonated drinks. Rather, ensure that your diet has plenty of fresh, good quality, raw fruit and vegetables. Include:

  • Cucumber
  • Broccoli
  • Avocado
  • Ginger
  • Seafood
  • Egg whites
  • Oats
  • Spinach
  • Kale
  • Lentils
  • Seaweed / nori
  • Sea salt
  • Pumpkin seeds
  • Apple cider vinegar

What Else You Can Do to Reduce Acidity

It is essential to reduce stress and improve your diet. Even small changes can make big differences. Think about doing Pilates or yoga, take long walks (away from devices), spend time in the morning sunshine, and listen to music or meditation apps that soothe your soul.

Use breathing techniques to oxygenate your system, which slows down your body’s production of toxic waste.

Drink plenty of water to keep your kidneys flushed and efficient. An annual liver cleanse is a good idea too.

Supplements

Taking certain supplements can help your body immensely to be less acidic and more neutral.
