If you’re feeling a bit worn down, washed out, chronically ill, or just plain pooped, it might be time for a total reset. But…without the self-control, denial, or cost that you might expect from a full detox and recovery. Because who has the time or energy for that, right? And, when it comes to electrolytes, they’re not only for people that are experiencing nagging symptoms. In fact, we all need a little boost on a daily basis.

The term “electrolytes” is thrown around quite lightly considering how important (and complex) they are and the huge variety of things that can go wrong without enough of them! They’re also necessary for a sharp mind, focus, and maintaining a healthy amount of fluid in each cell in our body.

Some causes of an imbalance in electrolytes include overhydration (diluting our fluids, blood, and urine), dehydration, certain medications (such as diuretics and cancer treatment), organ diseases, sweating excessively (resulting in a loss of important minerals through perspiration), poor diet, bulimia, diarrhoea, vomiting, or a weak immune system.

Common electrolytes include magnesium, calcium, potassium, phosphate, sodium, and chloride.

You Need More Electrolytes

Electrolytes are essential to your survival, and you may not even know that you’re deficient. So, while there are some intense symptoms of a shortage of electrolytes, we all need to boost our electrolyte intake, whether it’s for improved focus and reduction of brain fog, or to tackle some serious symptoms.

It’s essential to support your electrolyte intake when you:

  • Have deadlines and obligations to meet that require you to be on top of your game.
  • Need clarity of mind.
  • Sleep, when you naturally dehydrate.
  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Are experiencing any of the following issues or symptoms:
    • Fatigue
    • Confusion
    • Irregular heartbeat
    • Bone disorders
    • Weakness in your muscles
    • Muscles that twitch and spasm
    • Fluctuating blood pressure
    • Numbness
    • Seizures, convulsions, and other disorders of the nervous system

The Main Electrolyte Deficiencies and Their Symptoms

Calcium

This mineralises and maintains healthy bones, skin, and teeth; but is actually essential for every single cell in your body. So, without it, our bones begin to deteriorate, and we can develop osteoporosis. It’s also a signalling molecule that ensures that the muscles, nerves, and heart work properly. So, a shortage may compromise nerve, muscle, and heart function.

Magnesium

This electrolyte participates in over 300 enzyme reactions. When we don’t get enough magnesium, this could result in heart disease, osteoporosis, type 2 diabetes, and metabolic issues.

Potassium

This maintains the correct level of fluids in our cells. Without enough of it, we might experience cramps, fatigue, constipation, confusion, weakness, arrhythmia, numbness, and increased urination.

Sodium

Sodium helps to conduct nerve impulses, controls the contraction and relaxation of muscles, and plays a role in keeping the fluid level in our cells constant. Without it, we may experience fatigue, irritability, nausea, confusion, headaches, and muscle cramps. Eventually, this could lead to seizures and even a coma.

Chloride

This vital substance does so much; including the regulation of other electrolytes, maintaining an electrically neutral state in our bodies, and maintaining the correct acid/base levels. Without enough chloride, we could experience dehydration, vomiting, dehydration, fatigue, weakness, and breathing problems.

Phosphate

This plays a crucial role as a building block for cell membranes and DNA, as well as for healthy bones and teeth. Symptoms of a deficiency in it include stiff joints, painful bones, irritability, changes in weight, irregular breathing, and a change in appetite.
