Inflammation in your body is the silent perpetrator of so many other issues. All too often, healthcare professionals treat the symptoms, but aren’t getting down to the inflammatory root of them. By understanding what this is, how it affects your body, and what you can do to prevent or reduce it; you have the power to look and feel so much better.

What is It?

Put simply, inflammation is your body’s way of reacting to poisons, stress, or infections. Your body is so finely tuned, with such intricate rhythms, that it is aware of these issues long before you feel a physical symptom. It reacts by becoming inflamed.

This is designed to fight infections, activate proteins to protect your cells and tissues, and prepare you to flee or fight in a dangerous situation or emotional attack.

The immune system is reacting with inflammation to activate these processes. However, when the immune system overreacts, the inflammation is used against us, causing a host of other problems.

What Harm Can Inflammation Cause to the Body?

While inflammation certainly has a vital role to play in our body and immunity, chronic inflammation is a massive problem.

  • It prepares you to deal with trauma by releasing inflammatory markers into the bloodstream. So, when we dwell on past traumas, we keep this inflammation activated in our body. This means that your body is in a state of stress and anxiety in the long term, even when there is no danger or trauma.
  • Immune cells may malfunction and attack the gut, causing issues like Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis (IBD’s, or inflammatory bowel diseases). These cause bloating, cramping, diarrhoea, constipation, and bleeding ulcers.
  • Inflammation in the joints (rheumatoid arthritis) is a painful condition that can compromise your ability to exercise, carry any kind of weight, or just perform day-to-day activities.
  • It can also interfere with your sleep.
  • When your immune system is compromised, it is less able to fight serious diseases like cancer.
  • Inflammation damages your lungs, leading to the airways becoming narrowed and a build-up of fluid. This can cause asthma, lung infections, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
  • Inflammation can occur inside the blood vessels when any part of your body is damaged or injured. Over time, this can lead to a heart attack.
  • Chronic inflammation makes it much harder to lose weight because it slows down your metabolism, fires off hunger signals, and increases your resistance to insulin.
  • It affects skin and bone health negatively.
  • When the brain becomes inflamed due to trauma, it can cause depression.

Foods that Reduce Inflammation

Incorporate anti-inflammatory food into your diet to help your body. Include the following foods in your meals and juices:

  • Berries (blueberries, strawberries and raspberries are excellent options)
  • Olive oil
  • Cruciferous (green and leafy) vegetables like kale, broccoli and spinach
  • Oily fish (mackerel, salmon, anchovies and sardines are ideal)
  • Green tea
  • Avocadoes
  • Bell peppers and chillies
  • Grapes
  • Turmeric
  • Dark chocolate
  • Tomatoes
  • Almonds and walnuts

Other Ways to Reduce Inflammation

In addition to avoiding processed and junk food, there are other proactive ways that you can fight inflammation in your body.

As a first step, it is important to avoid dwelling on past traumas and to deal with the current issues that are causing anxiety. If necessary, get the support (whether medical or not) that you need to work through grief, stress or trauma.

Exercise is a fantastic way to get rid of excess adrenalin and stress. Set aside at least 30 minutes a day to get your heart rate up and work up a sweat – whether you walk, speed-walk, swim, run or cycle. If you are overweight, reducing your weight is a good way to reduce inflammation too. Losing weight activates the reduction of inflammatory markers.

There are a number of drinks that also reduce inflammation. Try:

  • Half a teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda in a glass of water
  • Bone broth
  • Warm water with lemon and ginger
  • Golden turmeric tea
  • Green tea
