Inflammation in your body is the silent perpetrator of so many other issues. All too often, healthcare professionals treat the symptoms, but aren’t getting down to the inflammatory root of them. What is It?

  • Immune cells may malfunction and attack the gut, causing issues like Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis (IBD’s, or inflammatory bowel diseases). These cause bloating, cramping, diarrhoea, constipation, and bleeding ulcers.
  • Inflammation in the joints (rheumatoid arthritis) is a painful condition that can compromise your ability to exercise, carry any kind of weight, or just perform day-to-day activities.  
  • It can also interfere with your sleep.
  • When your immune system is compromised, it is less able to fight serious diseases like cancer.
  • Inflammation damages your lungs, leading to the airways becoming narrowed and a build-up of fluid. This can cause asthma, lung infections, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
  • Inflammation can occur inside the blood vessels when any part of your body is damaged or injured. Over time, this can lead to a heart attack.

  • Cruciferous (green and leafy) vegetables like kale, broccoli and spinach

  • Avocadoes
  • Bell peppers and chillies
  • Grapes
  • Turmeric
  • Dark chocolate
  • Tomatoes
  • Almonds and walnuts

Other Ways to Reduce Inflammation

In addition to avoiding processed and junk food, there are other proactive ways that you can fight inflammation in your body.

As a first step, it is important to avoid dwelling on past traumas and to deal with the current issues that are causing anxiety. If necessary, get the support (whether medical or not) that you need to work through grief, stress or trauma.

Exercise is a fantastic way to get rid of excess adrenalin and stress. Set aside at least 30 minutes a day to get your heart rate up and work up a sweat – whether you walk, speed-walk, swim, run or cycle.
